People who do not understand roof insulation, as with all things, assume that it is something to be fixed once the roof has been damaged. However, you can add new roof insulation over old.
Why would you want to use new roof insulation? For starters, new roof insulation can dramatically reduce energy bills by as much as 50 per cent. Second, new roof insulation can add up to several hundred dollars in savings for the homeowner who replaces old roof insulation.
If you replace old roof insulation but have a problem with your current roof, there are still a few options. Let’s examine the first option.
Roof insulation only works when the insulation is installed properly. If the insulation is installed properly, it will seal the leaks and prevent water from penetrating the roof, therefore preventing more damage.
If the insulation is improperly installed, it won’t seal the leaks and it won’t be as effective. Not only that but if it does seal the leaks, it will do nothing to prevent future leaks.
If you have to replace the entire roof, the only way to save money on a new roof is to make the old one look presentable. If the old insulation has rotted, it needs to be replaced. If you can remove the rotted insulation, you can replace it with a new insulated material that will look presentable.
You can either do the work yourself or hire a company to do the work in your attic space. Make sure you use good old quality insulation and that the insulation is UL approved.
Once the insulation is dry-fitted around the joists of the attic, you are finished. The attic will be protected from extreme temperatures, snow, and ice. If you want to add roof insulation, you are now left with two options. You can either make the old insulation look new, or you can make it look old. If you choose to make the old insulation look new, it will be very expensive.
You can hire a professional to install the insulation or you can take advantage of modern technology. Do a search online and you will find a number of companies that offer specialty insulation that looks and feels like the original insulation. The only difference is that it costs a lot less.
It will be far less expensive than paying an engineer to install the insulation. Now, you are left with two options, either get a roof that doesn’t leak in the wrong places or have someone put a roof over your head that leaks and doesn’t leak in the wrong places.
With so many ways to add new roof insulation over old, you should really think about how much money you are wasting by not doing it. If you have to replace your entire roof, you should spend as little money as possible.
